Top 10 School Districts in the San Antonio Metro Area in 2019

How does your school district stack up? Here are San Antonio's top-rated school districts!

Even if you don’t have kids (or they’re well-past graduation), your local school district’s quality can make or break your home’s value.

So how do San Antonio’s districts stack up? The following ISDs are the “Top 10 Districts in San Antonio” (according to Niche.com’s rigorous ranking system, at least).

141 Fair Oaks Place: $510,000 (Alamo Heights)

1. Alamo Heights ISD

Overall Grade: A+

Alamo Heights Independent School District is located in the Alamo Heights neighborhood off of Hwy 281, just northeast of downtown San Antonio. In recent state assessments, over 83% of students passed with a score of “proficient” in math and/or reading, and the student-teacher ratio is 15 to 1. Alamo ISD spends just over $15,000 on each student with a total annual budget of about $75,600,000. It is considered one of the top 10 “Best School districts in Texas” and #4 on Niche’s list of “Best Places to Teach in Texas”.

2Boerne ISD

Overall Grade: A+

Boerne Independent School District is located in Boerne, TX (several miles north of San Antonio via I-10). Boerne ISD boasts nearly 8,000 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16 to 1. Boerne ISD spends over $12,000 on each student, and it shows: in recent state assessments, nearly 90% of students were declared proficient in reading and math. Boerne was also ranked the top 56th “Safest School Districts in Texas” and in the Top 20 “Best School Districts in Texas” by Niche.

3. Randolph Field I SD

Randolph Field Independent School District is located in northeast San Antonio. Randolph Field ISD claims over 1,300 students (all grades). According to Texas state standards in recent assessments, over 90% of students scored “proficient” in math and/or reading! Impressive, y’all. The district spends nearly $12,000 on each student, and the student-teacher ratio is 15 to 1. Randolph Field was ranked in the top 20 “Districts with the Best Teachers in Texas” and #24 on the “Best School Districts in Texas” list.

4. Fort Sam Houston ISD

Overall Grade: A+

Fort Sam Houston Independent School District is centered around US Army base Fort Sam Houston (northeast of downtown San Antonio). Fort Sam ISD teaches just over 1,500 students and boasts a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. According to state assessments, over 80% of students scored “proficient” in math and/or reading. Fort Sam ISD spends an average of $13,327 and holds a graduation rate of 95%. To its acclaim, Fort Sam Houston ISD has earned a spot as #23 on the “Most Diverse School Districts in Texas”, as well as #27 overall on the “Best School Districts in Texas” list.

5. North East ISD

Overall Grade: A

North East Independent School District is, naturally, located in the northeast region of San Antonio. One of the largest districts on the list, NEISD’s headcount includes over 67,000 students. State assessments record that over 75% of students in this district are proficient in math and/or reading. NEISD spends over $10,000 on each student and boasts a student-teacher ratio of 16 to 1 (impressive for such a large school!). NEISD was ranked #48 on Niche’s list of “Best School Districts in Texas” and #32 on the “Most Diverse School Districts in Texas” list.

6. Lackla nd ISD

Overall Grade: A

Lackland Independent School District is located in western San Antonio. Nearly 1,000 students attend Lackland ISD schools (all grades). According to state assessments, over 85% of students in this district scored “proficient” in math and/or reading. Lackland ISD spends approximately $20,700 on each student, and the student-teacher ratio is 13 to 1. Lackland was named #59 on Niche’s list of the “Best School Districts in Texas” and #51 on the "Best Places to Teach in Texas" list.

7. Northside ISD

Northside Independent School District is located on the northern cusp of San Antonio and claims a spot as “largest district” on our list with over 100,000 students. According to Texas state standards in recent assessments, nearly 80% of students scored “proficient” in math and/or reading! The district spends over $10,000 on each student and the student-teacher ratio is 16 to 1. Northside ISD was ranked #56 on a list of the “Districts with the Best Teachers in Texas” and #61 on the “Best School Districts in Texas” list.

8. Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD

Overall Grade: A

Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District is located in Schertz, Texas, which is just northeast of San Antonio via I-35. This school district claims approximately 15,000 students. State assessments prove that over 80% of students are considered proficient in math and/or reading. Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD spends approximately $9,268 on each student and boasts a student-teacher ratio of 17 to 1. To its credit, this district was ranked #41 on the list of “Best School Districts for Athletes in Texas"!

9. Comal ISD

Comal Independent School District is a highly-rated system located in the Hill Country, just northeast of San Antonio city limits. Comal ISD claims over 21,000 students (all grades). According to Texas state standards in recent assessments, over 82% of students scored “proficient” in math and/or reading, and the graduation rate stands at 95%. The district spends over $8,000 on each student and the student-teacher ratio is 16 to 1.

10. Medina Valley ISD

Overall Grade: A-

Medina Valley Independent School District is a smaller local system located in the South San Antonio community of Castroville, TX. Across all grades, Medina ISD has 4,473 students who tend to score highly on state tests: 85% of students are proficient in math and 81% in reading. With a student-teacher ratio of 18 to 1, Medina ISD is also recognized on Niche.com's "Districts with the Best Teachers in Texas," as well as the list of "Most Diverse School Districts in Texas."
